Diverse Computing Welcomes New Faculty to Tallahassee

27 July 2018

Diverse Computing is always looking for new ways to build a stronger community in Tallahassee. Our Director of Communications & Community Outreach, Lester Hutt along with other graduates of Leadership Tallahassee, are heading up a plan to help new FSU/FAMU faculty get to know our city.

Called “Tallahassee Welcomes U,” this big event will kick off with a community-led reception in the Fall for new faculty and their partners. At this reception, organizers hope to foster an in-person and online network of elected officials, businesses, and community leaders that will connect our newcomers with Tallahassee residents and provide valuable referrals and resources.

“When you move to a new city there’s a lot to take care of,” said Lester. “How do you find a reputable daycare, plumber, or realtor without investing hours of research? That’s why I think Tallahassee Welcomes U is going to be such a success. It will be a beneficial partnership between new residents and local businesses where they can all build trust and grow connections with the community.”

Each attendee will receive a gift bag of locally sourced goods, contact information, referrals, and a list of the top 50 things to do in Tallahassee, all donated by local businesses. They will also be invited to participate in the Facebook community page, sign up for a monthly events newsletter, and enter their partners’ contact information into a mailing list for job referrals.

“This year FSU welcomes its largest-ever cohort of new faculty members,” said Janet Kistner, a co-organizer of the event and FSU’s Vice President for Faculty Development and Advancement. “The Tallahassee Welcomes U initiative sends an important message to our new faculty and their families about how much this community values them. I have no doubt that this initiative will reap benefits in faculty recruitment and retention in the years to come.”

The core need is to grow and sustain a creative solution to Tallahassee’s “brain drain” problem by showing people they can confidently put down roots in the area.

“Tallahassee has a lot to offer,” said Lester. “It’s just a matter of getting to know the people who can connect you to whatever you’re passionate about. We’re looking forward to showing off how helpful people in our community can be, but we’re also excited for what these new faculty can add to our city’s culture, diversity, and energy.”

TLH Welcomes U Reception is scheduled for August 22, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. To purchase tickets or become a sponsor, please visit donorbox.org/twu.
