The Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Annual Training Symposium is an annual event organized by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) that brings together law enforcement officials from local, state and federal agencies. This event provides us with an opportunity to interact with one another and share the knowledge and resources that allows us to provide the security and protection in which the citizens have come to trust, the law enforcement the government demands, and the service we have come to expect from ourselves.

This year we have chosen Tradewinds Island Resorts as our venue. Attendees will find a wide array of session choices and will have an opportunity to interact with vendors and other criminal justice personnel. Whether you are a terminal agency coordinator (TAC), or a corrections or booking officer or a clerks of court employee, or one of the thousands of other law enforcement officials around the state, this training is for you!

June 2011

June 27-30~ 2011 Nlets Annual Business Meeting held in Burlington, Vermont

This year’s meeting begins Monday, June 27 at the Hilton Burlington Hotel in Burlington, Vermont. Overlooking Lake Champlain, “America’s Sixth Great Lake,” the hotel is the centerpiece of Burlington’s acclaimed “Waterfront Renaissance.” Historic, award-winning Church Street Marketplace—often likened to a Parisian cobblestone boulevard with its cafés, shops, boutiques, and restaurants—is just an easy stroll from the hotel. Also close are popular Vermont attractions such as Echo Lake Aquarium, Shelburne Museum, Ben & Jerry’s, the Historic Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, and many others. World-class mountain resorts including Stowe, Sugarbush, and Jay Peak are also easily accessible.

The 2011 meeting will be full of opportunities to learn current industry standards, as well as opportunities to share new information and ideas. The meeting is also a chance to meet and network with both new and veteran Nlets representatives, as well as our strategic partners.  A number of vendors will also be available to discuss their diverse product lines.

Our goal for this meeting is to provide an environment conducive to learning and understanding the path of information sharing in the future.

May 2011

May 15-18~ 2011 STARS Workshop held in Savannah, Georgia

The STARS Workshop is your foremost resource providing the tools and education for the perpetual re-visioning necessary to keep you on the leading edge of excellence. This past year has seen many challenges and changes, budget shortages never before experienced, and a not-so-promising economic forecast; however the demands placed upon each of our agencies, and upon each of us, march on without missing a beat. And likewise, being the dedicated individuals we are, we will consistently strive to over-deliver. The hallmark of the STARS Workshop is to help by providing practical information and tools capable of being immediately used and implemented.

One of the single biggest issues facing all CJIS users is the implementation of the new CJIS Security Policy, Version 5.0. Like all previous versions, this policy contains information security requirements, guidelines, and agreements reflecting the will of law enforcement and criminal justice agencies for protecting the sources, transmission, storage, and generation of Criminal Justice Information (CJI); and the Personally Identifiable Information derived from CJI.

Version 5.0 brings many changes, the least of which is the auditing requirement of non-criminal justice agency use of the system. This and the other aspects of changes will be discussed by representatives of the FBI, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and the training, audit, and ISO staff of various state programs. These and the other presentations will deliver the information critical to increasing the efficiency of our various systems, and ultimately the safety and security of our citizens.

Throughout the three days of the workshop you will receive succinct, yet consistent, messages of positive attitudes, ideas, and leadership qualities.

The diversity of the presenters and topics is intended to foster a unique educational experience encouraging attendees to expand their thought process, and thus, their cadre of leadership skills.

The STARS Workshop provides a one-of-a-kind environment for expanding your leadership skills and broadening your networking opportunities through using the breaks, meal times, and evening hours to visit with like-minded colleagues. Collaborative partnerships are essential to the success of our organizations’; please take a moment to express your gratitude to each of our partners (sponsors) who will also be in attendance throughout the conference.

Practitioners involved, at any level, in FBI CJIS and/or Nlets Training & Education, Auditing, Information System Security, system use, or related software or hardware development or consulting are strongly encouraged to attend. Any active or retired members of the public safety/criminal justice professions are also welcome.
