CJIS Security Policy

The Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) Security Policy requires that “Advanced Authentication” be deployed for all users accessing CJIS data from an unsecured location. CJIS’s Advanced Authentication must be adhered to by September 30th, 2013.

CJIS is a division of the FBI which houses the world’s largest repository of criminal fingerprints and history records. Federal, state and local law enforcement and criminal justice agencies are granted access to this extremely sensitive information. However, due to the inclining rate of hackers gaining unauthorized access to databases around the world, CJIS set forth requirements to secure access the to CJIS database.

CJIS’s Advanced Authentication requires an additional factor of authentication after the username and password. This second factor of authentication enhances the databases security by verifying the identity of the individual accessing the data. One such example would be a police officer who needs to access the CJIS database from their laptop mounted in a police vehicle from an unsecured location.

SecureX2 offers a simple solution for officers by utilizing their cell phones as the second factor of authentication. Upon logging in, SecureX2’s Authenticator instantly sends the X2Passcode as a text message to the user’s cell phone. The user enters the X2Passcode and has access to the CJIS database to gain mission critical information.

All agencies are held accountable for complying with CJIS’s Security Policy of Advanced Authentication by September 30th, 2013.
